The Russian Federation, Belarus, China and 20 other countries voted against the updated resolution “The human rights situation in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol (Ukraine)”.

This is demonstrated by the results of the vote, which were demonstrated during the online broadcast of the UN General Assembly meeting on the organization’s website.

23 member states of the UN voted against the adoption of this resolution. In particular, these are Angola, Armenia, Belarus, Burundi, Cambodia, China, Comoros, Cuba, North Korea, Eritrea, India, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Myanmar, Nicaragua, Philippines, Serbia, Sudan, Syria, Venezuela and Zimbabwe.

Resolutions of the UN General Assembly on Crimea

On December 16, the UN General Assembly endorsed an updated draft resolution on the human rights situation in Crimea. A key element of the resolution is an appeal to the international community to strengthen interaction to pressure the Russian Federation to force it to fulfill its international obligations as an occupying state.

On December 7, the United Nations General Assembly supported the updated resolution “Problem of militarization of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol, Ukraine, as well as parts of the Black and Azov seas”.

Occupation of Crimea by Russia

  • Russia annexed Crimea from Ukraine in March 2014 after the introduction of troops, organizing a pseudo-referendum on its self-determination in March 2014. Self-proclaimed Crimean authorities said 96.77% of the peninsula’s inhabitants were in favor of the annexation of Crimea to the Russian Federation.
  • On March 18, 2014, a so-called “agreement” on the admission of Crimea and Sevastopol to the Russian Federation was signed in the Kremlin.
  • Western countries do not recognize the occupation of Crimea and have introduced a series of economic sanctions against the Russian Federation.
  • The Verkhovna Rada officially announced the beginning of the temporary occupation of Crimea on February 20, 2014.
