Germany’s position on the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline has not changed. It needs to be completed.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel announced it today in the Bundestag.
He noted that even after the completion and commissioning of the gas pipeline, Ukraine should remain in the status of a transit country for gas from Russia to the European Union.
“The government’s position on Nord Stream 2 has not changed and has remained the same as in previous years,” Merkel said.
As a reminder, the Russian pipelayer began work on the construction of the Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline on December 11. The works are being carried out in the territorial waters of Germany.
It was previously reported that the US Congress approved military assistance to Ukraine and sanctions against Nord Stream 2. Sanctions will be imposed for the provision of vessels for laying pipelines, as well as for insurance services for the project.
In addition, the United States asked Germany to halt construction of Nord Stream 2. Robin Quinville, US Chargé d’Affaires in Germany, said the EU and Germany should impose a moratorium.
