News from the United States. Michigan protests quarantine on May 1

[ad_1]

The longer the quarantine lasts, the more supporters of its cancellation. Last week, “Country” spoke about a series of demonstrations in different countries: the United States, Brazil, France, Russia. However, yesterday people already took up arms, so the authorities completed the universal self-isolation regime.

It happened in the American state of Michigan. There, supporters of Donald Trump, who also wants to quickly end the quarantine, gathered at the local Capitol (the building where state authorities are located). These are mainly strong men with weapons and rifles. They require the self-isolation mode to finally complete. Read how the story unfolds in the “Country” article.

What’s going on in Michigan?

Michigan is a state in the midwestern United States that borders Canada and American Ohio and Indiana (see map below). Washington is about 600 miles away. The state capital is Lansing, and the largest city is Detroit.

The situation with coronavirus in this region is evaluated as severe. Michigan is the fourth in the country for infections. More than 41 thousand people became ill with Covid-19 (almost four times more than in the whole of Ukraine), 3,700 patients died.

The Michigan quarantine should end only after two weeks, on May 15. However, today in the local parliament the decision was made to extend it until May 28.

Michigan is chaired by Democratic Governor Gretchen Whitmer, 48. By their will, contrary to the protesters’ demands, the quarantine continued until the end of the month.

As the governor worked with his team, Trump supporters (also opposed to self-isolation) launched an assault on the state capitol in the city of Lansing. But, according to the American media, they did so only after measuring the temperature at the entrance.

The only requirement for people with weapons is not to renew the quarantine, but to complete it today. They want to get to work as soon as possible and return to their normal lifestyle.

Carrying weapons is not prohibited in Michigan, which is what the locals took advantage of. The police let them into the building. But on the way to the meeting room, they ran into security, they couldn’t get there. People started singing, “Come on!” Some MPs, fearing for their lives, put on bulletproof vests.

At the same time, the State House tried to block the decision to extend the quarantine. Republican majority (the party that Trump represents is Ed.) passed a resolution that gives Republican President Lee Chatfield the opportunity to challenge the Governor.

#MichiganTerrorists

Armed protesters fully settled in and around the Michigan Capitol. Many of them have bandages and balaclavas on their faces. Two other identifying marks: on the clothing there are elements of camouflage and the American flag.

Some Americans who describe what’s happening on the scene add the hashtag #MichiganTerrorists – Michigan terrorists to their posts and tweets.
