President Volodymyr Zelensky’s Happy New Year greetings in both 2020 and 2021 begin with abandoning the traditional wayand so appeal to ordinary Ukrainians – show touching moments from their lives or give them a floor on the podium.

A bet on originality
In the two extreme New Year’s greetings to Zelensky, at first, there is an emphasis on abandoning the usual way. So, summarizing the results of the year 2019, the Ukrainian leader said:
“Very often when the president addresses us, we turn off the sound to switch to sandwiches with sprats and olivier. Today will be different.”
In the opening minutes of his 2020 results speech, Zelensky had this to say:
“Dear Ukrainians! There are only a few minutes left until the end of 2020. It is time to summarize, draw conclusions, talk about plans and goals … Boring? I agree! I will tell you understandable to you.
Then the camera changed the plan, showing that the head of the country was not in an ordinary speech, he was standing in front of the children who were the first to hear the president’s congratulations on the New Year.

The main emphasis in the congratulations for 2021 is on Zelensky’s “dialogue” with children, as well as simplicity, since the speech must be understandable even by young citizens.
In congratulating Ukrainians on 2020, the president used the phrase “Who am I?” It became the main feature of the speech in which Zelensky spoke about the past year using examples of situations from the lives of citizens.
Both the new video and the one from last year used footage of the Ukrainians, shot during the year. These fragments show how the country lived during this period.
In the previous year, famous athletes, cultural figures, politicians participated in the congratulations. In the new one, the heroes of the video were not celebrities, but ordinary citizens.
Occupation of Donbass and Crimea
In both congratulations, the Ukrainian leader wished the citizens of the world. Zelenskiy also raised the issue of Russian aggression last year, but more attention was paid to the unity of all citizens.
