This was announced by the head of the Ministry of Health, Zveli Mkhize, on Twitter.
According to him, a new type of coronavirus in South Africa, genetics began to be studied in March, but has recently become predominant. The new COVID-19 strain also has three mutation variants.
Local authorities associate the rapid increase in the incidence of coronavirus with this particular strain of COVID-19.
Mkhize, referring to medical reports, announced a change in the proportion of patients: more and more young people are in critical condition due to the coronavirus.
In samples taken from people infected with the new variant of the virus, the viral load is higher than in patients with other strains of coronavirus. This can make the infection spread more quickly. It is not clear if there are more deaths from coronavirus.
The minister assured that there are still no reasons for panic.
“It is important to re-emphasize that while this mutation is a concern, there is no reason to panic,” he concluded.
A new strain of coronavirus was registered in the United Kingdom, more than a thousand cases of infection have already been identified in 60 regions of the state.
