NBU resumed selling foreign exchange on the interbank market to support the hryvnia

The Central Bank came out with the sale of currency for the first time since the beginning of November

During the week of December 21-24, 2020, the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) sold $ 43.10 million on the interbank foreign exchange market. At the same time, the central bank did not intervene to buy foreign exchange.

This was reported on the NBU website.

Therefore, the NBU entered the market with the sale of foreign currency for the first time since the beginning of November. At the same time, in the previous two weeks, there was an oversupply in the market and the NBU was buying currency.

According to the central bank, since the beginning of the year, the NBU bought foreign currency for $ 4,929.00 million and sold them for $ 3,844.70 million. Since the beginning of 2020, the net purchase of foreign currency by the National Bank amounted to $ 1,084.30 million.

Recall that the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) on December 28, 2020 set the official rate at 28.35 hryvnia per dollar. During the past week, the rate increased 1.9% (from December 27.82 to December 21).

According to analysts’ forecasts, by the end of the year the rate may remain around the level of 28.20 hryvnia per dollar.

Note that according to the NBU forecast, record budget payments in late 2020 may put pressure on the hryvnia exchange rate.
