The US Congress is preparing to impose sanctions against Russia in connection with the poisoning of opposition leader Alexei Navalny. The bill was introduced by a group of US senators.
This was reported on the website of one of the project’s authors, Delaware Sen. Chris Koons.
The senators propose to impose sanctions on Russian officials “involved in serious violations of international law.”
“The bill instructs the administration to determine whether the Kremlin has violated US laws prohibiting the use of chemical and biological weapons,” the report says.
Note that Navalny was probably poisoned with a Novichok group chemical. The Russian authorities are suspected of being involved in the poisoning, as Navalny is the most famous Russian opposition figure.
Earlier, the head of the State Department, Mike Pompeo, said that there is a high probability that the poisoning of Navalny was ordered by high-ranking officials in Moscow.
We will recall, earlier at the OPCW he expressed “serious concern” about the message about the poisoning of Navalny with poison of the “Novichok” class.
