Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny woke up today after an artificial coma, into which he was introduced by doctors. The politician is clearly on the mend and can now breathe on his own.
Strana found out what this meant for the politician’s poisoning scandal.
Breathe and hear. How Navalny woke up
Today a short but important message has appeared on the website of the Charite clinic in Berlin, where the Russian opponent is discussed.
“The condition of Alexei Navalny, who has been in treatment at the Charité since August 22, 2020, has improved.
The patient was brought out of a medical coma and removed from mechanical ventilation. Responds to human speech. However, it is too early to assess the long-term consequences of his severe poisoning, “the doctors said.
Thus, the politician was in a coma for 18 days. And now you can breathe alone and understand what others are saying to you.
Alexei Navalny fell into a coma on August 20 in the Russian city of Omsk. He felt bad on the plane.
At the local hospital, they did tests and found no poison, suggesting he had acute pancreatitis. Later, doctors from Russia’s Navalny said that the patient’s blood sugar level dropped dramatically due to the diets he had followed the day before.
Family members ensured that the politician was sent for treatment to Germany, which officially asked the Kremlin about it. So Navalny ended up in the Charité, where they almost immediately announced that the opponent had been poisoned.
And on September 2, the laboratory of the German Bundeswehr (that is, the army) found traces of “Novichok”, a powerful military poison of Soviet design in Navalny’s analyzes. Then Germany, the European Union and the United States demanded an explanation from Moscow.
In Russia, they demanded proof – the official conclusion of the doctors or scientists who examined Navalny’s blood. And also the admission to his analyzes of Russian specialists. However, the Germans refused, claiming secrecy.
That is, while Navalny’s poisoning by Novichok is just the words of the German government. This is under pressure in Russia. They also believe that the poisoning story was inspired from outside to have a reason to pressure Moscow.
The theme with “Novice” and other illogical things have a lot – we analyzed them in the material The Second Coming of “Novice”. What does a new twist in the Navalny case mean for Ukraine, Russia and Europe? The main thing is that the Kremlin’s motive is incomprehensible, so the healthy Navalny did not pose any danger, and the poisoned one creates a lot of geopolitical problems.
But now the politician has regained consciousness and is apparently improving. Let’s see how this twist will affect the poisoning story.
What to expect after Navalny wakes up
It should be noted that the situation with Navalny is developing according to a very fast-paced “Skripal scenario”: he also recovered after the poisoning. True, after the western countries began to expel Russian diplomats. In Alexei’s case, it hasn’t come to this yet.
Now it is obvious that the Navalny topic will receive a new impetus: each new message about his well-being will fuel interest in the story. And don’t let it stop. And at the same time, to drown out the conversation that the Germans do not provide the data on the basis of which they came to a conclusion about the Novichok poisoning.
At the same time, with Navalny’s awakening, there is more and more reason to doubt this data. If Alexei can already do without a fan and is clearly improving, two questions arise.
one. Was it “rookie”? After all, we are talking about a potent combat poison, recognized throughout the world as a chemical weapon of mass destruction. If the person poisoned by him survived (and not the first one), then it is possible that something is wrong with the “Novichok”. And maybe it’s not him at all.
Furthermore, with the exception of Navalny, no one else was poisoned, although, we repeat, “Novichok” refers to the poisons of mass action. In Salisbury itself, where Skripal was persecuted, other people were injured and police and doctors wore chemical protective suits.
two. If we assume that it was this poison that was dumped on Navalny, but still survived, then there was a microscopic dose. Which will not kill, but will leave traces and can easily become a political plane (accusations against the Kremlin, new sanctions or as an element of negotiation on other issues on the international agenda).
The version of the reduced dose was presented to the media by the former head of the laboratory of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) Mark-Michael Bloom. But if we take it as a basis, then the obvious goal is not the death of the object, but the scandal with its poisoning.
However, it does not progress smoothly. Moscow’s opponents have more problem areas with Navalny than with Skripal. First of all, Russia voluntarily extradited Alexei for treatment to Germany, eliminating many questions early on. Second, no one expressed a clear reason why Putin had to poison him.
With Skripal, the issue was more plausible: the GRU defector could clearly be on the clearance list. And the strange story with the “tourists” Petrov and Boshirov, who arrived in Salisbury on the eve of the Skripal poisoning, only added fuel to the fire.
This does not prove that the Kremlin tried to kill the former intelligence officer, but it does raise some suspicions. In the case of Navalny, the West can only explain the situation more or less consistently in the press (“Putin’s criticism has been poisoned”). Although this, of course, does not prove anything.
Kremlin loyalist political analyst Sergei Markov said today that “Putin breathed a sigh of relief today.”
“Navalny is recovering. He came out of a coma. And very well! I wish Alexei to regain his normal health as soon as possible and return to public activities. His anti-corruption investigations are very useful for Russia for self-cleaning. In fact, the Popular Front All of Russia should be involved in such investigations. The possible death of Navalny, of course, would significantly destabilize Russian policy. Therefore, Navalny’s recovery is very good for Russia in all respects. I think Putin breathed a sigh of relief today The healthy Alexei Navalny makes Russian politics healthier! “He wrote.
