NATO warns Ukraine that there are no shortcuts to membership

The decisions of the NATO Bucharest Summit on the open door policy remain in force

It is very important that Ukraine’s defense and security reforms are carried out in an integrated manner, the Alliance noted.

NATO hopes that Ukraine will continue to focus on domestic reforms. There are no shortcuts to being a member of the Alliance. Vineta Kleine, director of the NATO Information and Documentation Center, said this during a panel discussion on the topic: NATO-Ukraine relations in the context of sustainable peace in Donbass, UNIAN reports on Wednesday, November 18.

“The presentation of the Membership Action Plan does not precondition any decision on NATO membership,” emphasized Kleine.

At the same time, he stated that there is still a very important direction, which the Alliance strongly supports regarding the implementation of reforms in Ukraine.

“These are the current reforms of Ukraine in the field of security and defense. It is very important that these reforms are carried out in an integrated manner, and it is important that during this process all aspects are taken into account, and in particular , such as the strengthening of measures to combat corruption, guarantee democracy, control and supervision and civil control over the Armed Forces of Ukraine and the security agencies ”, he added.

Kleine noted that it took her home country of Latvia 10 years “to work hard and very carefully” to implement reforms to get closer to NATO. According to her, the reforms should not be stopped and applied on a regular basis. “There shouldn’t be, for example, one step forward and two steps back,” Kleine said.

“Of course, there are no shortcuts to being a member of NATO. And in terms of reforms, Ukraine has made commitments. It is very important that they are implemented and implemented, and that they bring results,” Kleine emphasized.

In this regard, he recalled that the decisions of the NATO summit in Bucharest, which took place in 2008, on the open door policy are still in force.

“NATO hopes that Ukraine will continue to focus on internal reforms. Successful implementation of reforms is the best way to move further towards membership,” added Kleine.

Earlier, the US ambassador mentioned the main problems on Ukraine’s path to NATO. So, in his opinion, on Ukraine’s path to NATO, the main problems are Russian aggression in Donbass and Crimea, as well as internal corruption.
