Once the deadline for fulfilling the demands of the people’s ultimatum to the President of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, had expired, a popular strike was started in the country. As of this morning, workers in factories and state companies, teachers, doctors, students and pensioners went on strike.

Today in Belarus, a national strike of large companies is taking place, as well as protests by students and pensioners, which were previously called by opposition leader Svetlana Tikhanovskaya. This is reported in the TUT.BY edition.

Workers from companies, as well as employees from various departments and institutions across the country, took to the streets. Workers from MAZ, Belaruskali, Grodno Azot, High Technologies Park, Minsk Electrotechnical Plant named after Kozlov, Atlant, Minsk Tractor Plant, Belarusneft and many other companies are taking part in the strike. Doctors and educators are also on strike.

The publication writes that the Minister of Education, Igor Karpenko, said: the actions of the students are taking manifest forms of aggression, for which “they will be repressed with legal measures”.

The security forces have already started detaining the protesters. According to human rights activists from the Viasna center, 188 people have already been detained in Minsk, Grodno, Brest, Mogilev and other cities.

At 6 p.m. Minsk time (5 p.m. Kiev time), a national action will take place in the country in support of the strike.

In Belarus, since August 9, massive protests by those who disagree with the voting results in the presidential elections in Belarus have continued. According to official data, Lukashenka won them with 80.1% of the voters. Tikhanovskaya ranked second with 10.1% of the vote. At the same time, alternative exit polls showed the opposite picture: Tikhanovskaya’s confident victory.

The Belarusian security forces violently dispersed the demonstrations using explosive grenades, rubber bullets and water cannons. During the protests, hundreds of protesters were injured and wounded, and more than 14,000 people were arrested. According to official figures, four protesters died.

Lukashenka assumed the presidency on September 23. For the first time in the history of Belarus, the opening ceremony was not announced or broadcast on television. Several states, including the United States, Great Britain, Canada, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Poland, Denmark, Ukraine and the Czech Republic, did not recognize Lukashenko’s inauguration.

October 25 in Belarus was the last day of the people’s ultimatum delivered to Tikhanovskaya Lukashenko. On this day, in Minsk alone, more than 100,000 people participated in the eleventh protest march.

Tikhanovskaya declared that if Lukashenka does not resign on that day, on October 26 the Belarusians will declare a national strike in all companies, go out to block roads and collapse sales in state stores. The portal TUT.BY writes that today some Belarusian companies decided to organize weekends, while others went on vacation indefinitely.

In the protests on October 25, 290 people were arrested.
