The Stratospheric Observatory of the US National Space Agency found that there is water in a cubic meter of lunar soil in amounts ranging from 100 to 412 ppm, which is equivalent to a 0.3 liter bottle of water.
The United States National Space Agency (NASA) reported today that water has been detected on the lunar solar surface.
Water molecules (H2O) have been discovered in the Clavius crater, one of the largest craters visible from Earth.
Such a discovery was made by the SOFIA stratospheric observatory. Scientists have found that there is water in a cubic meter of soil in an amount of 100 to 412 ppm, which is equivalent to a 0.3 liter bottle of water.
NASA cites the example that the Sahara desert has 100 times more water than SOFIA found on the lunar soil. But still, scientists are now faced with the question of how water is formed and stored on the moon’s harsh airless surface.
Paul Hertz, director of the department of astrophysics in NASA’s science missions department, said scientists had previously believed that water familiar to people could be present on the sunny side of the moon. “We now know that this is the case. This discovery raises an intriguing question about the resources required to explore deep space,” the scientist added.
