Millions of minks to be destroyed in Denmark due to coronavirus mutation

All minks in Denmark will be destroyed

The mutated coronavirus found in mink spreads to humans and reduces their ability to form antibodies.

Danish authorities ordered the destruction of all mink from the country’s fur farms after detecting cases of infection with the mutated coronavirus COVID-19. This was stated by Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen at a press conference on Wednesday, November 4.

The mutated coronavirus found in mink spreads to humans and reduces the ability to form antibodies, Frederiksen said. Additionally, the mutation poses a problem for the coronavirus vaccine in development.

Currently, 12 people have been identified with a mutated variant of the coronavirus in North Jutland. Frederiksen warned that it could spread not only to the rest of Denmark but to the entire world. Fur farm owners will be assisted in this, said Food and Fisheries Minister Mogens Jensen.

Denmark is the world’s largest producer of mink fur. There are 1,139 mink farms in the country, in which a total of 15-17 million minks live. More than 200 farms have reported coronavirus cases, 67 of which have already destroyed all the animals.

Recall that in early June, the Dutch authorities made a similar decision, which also recorded outbreaks of coronavirus in mink farms.
