Angela Merkel held a video conference with the prime ministers of 16 German federal states
During the Christmas holidays in Germany, gatherings in a small family circle with the participation of no more than five people will be allowed.
The German authorities, in the context of the difficult situation with the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic, have decided to introduce a strict quarantine from December 16. It will run until at least January 10. This was announced on Sunday, December 13, by Chancellor Angela Merkel after a videoconference with the prime ministers of 16 German federal states.
“The measures we have taken since November 2 are not enough. We have to act and we are doing it now,” Merkel said, adding that Germany is again seeing a rapid increase in the number of new cases of coronavirus infection.
Across the country, retail stores will be closed, with the exception of grocery stores, full-time education in schools will be stopped, and kindergartens will be closed.
In addition to grocery stores, pharmacies, dry goods, gas stations, banks, savings banks, and post offices will remain open.
Some other exceptions are also provided. For the Christmas holidays from December 24 to 26, gatherings in a close family circle with the participation of no more than five people are allowed, excluding children under 14 years of age. On New Year’s Day (December 31 and January 1), a ban on gatherings is introduced, citizens are strongly advised to refuse to launch fireworks.
During the period of a hard confinement, it is allowed to attend religious services, but only if the social distance and the mask regime are observed. Singing is prohibited in temples. Major services will only be admitted by appointment. From December 16 to January 10, citizens are advised to refuse to travel to other regions of Germany or abroad, except in cases where it is absolutely necessary.
Businesses affected by the blockade can expect to receive more extensive government assistance. The maximum amount of aid is increased from 200,000 to 500,000 euros, but only for those companies that are directly or indirectly threatened with bankruptcy. Compensation is also provided for the loss of price of the goods.
Remember that on December 3 in Germany, a partial lockdown was extended for three weeks, until January 10, 2021. Previously, the partial quarantine in Germany was planned to be valid until December 20.
