On November 30, the Security Service of Ukraine searched the offices of one of the foreign charitable foundations in the Transcarpathian region. MEPs from the ruling Hungarian Fidesz party, as well as the Christian People’s Democratic Party, said the searches were aimed at “intimidation” and “pressure.”
MEPs from the ruling Hungarian “Fidesz” party as well as the Christian People’s Democratic Party (KDNP) saw a “civil war” in the situation with the searches in the Transcarpathian region.
This is what Fidesz and KDNP said in a statement issued on December 2.
November 30 Security Service of Ukraine searches carried out in the Transcarpathian region of the officials of one of the foreign charitable foundations. The SBU verified the information about the fund’s participation in activities aimed at violating Ukraine’s sovereignty.
Hungarian MEPs considered the investigative actions to be politically motivated and claimed that the purpose of the searches was “intimidation” and “pressure”.
“The Ukrainian government is creating a situation of civil war in Transcarpathia. We consider this shameful and deeply condemn the use of the Armed Forces by the Ukrainian government against the leaders and organizations of the Hungarian community in Transcarpathia,” they said.
MEPs called searches “coordinated actions of assailants” against “legitimate organizations of the Hungarian minority”, compared to “by the methods of the Stalinist totalitarian system” and declared that the Ukrainian government “for years has violated” the rights of national minorities.
The statement also mentions that the Hungarian government and the Hungarian community in the Transcarpathian region opposed Ukrainian laws on the state language and education. The deputies described its adoption as an example of a violation of rights that “it can have serious consequences. ”
The Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs due to the searches on November 30 summoned the Ambassador of Ukraine and expressed dissatisfaction with the actions of the Ukrainian authorities.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Dmitry Kuleba, met on December 1 with the Ambassador of Hungary, calling on the Hungarian side to avoid measures and statements that do not reflect reality.
“Any allegation of alleged intimidation of the Hungarian community or part of it in Ukraine is unfounded speculation. In Ukraine, as a state governed by the rule of law, the principle of individual responsibility operates, not collective,” said the Minister of External relationships.
