Leonid Kharchenko, a defendant in a criminal case for the 2014 Malaysian Boeing accident, was arrested in Donetsk, the BBC’s Russian Service reports, citing his sources. Previously, Kharchenko was charged with illegal possession of weapons.
Kharchenko was arrested by DNR authorities in March. It should be noted that he is being held in a pre-trial detention center in Donetsk. One of the BBC’s interlocutors points out that Kharchenko was especially isolated so that representatives of the Ukrainian special services could not steal it. Co-worker Kharchenko confirmed information about his placement in a pre-trial detention center. He also noted that the accusations of possession of weapons and illegal searches are absurd. Because the weapon was issued by the MGB, and there were no claims from the search side.
“It can be protected in such a cruel way, but this is a very strange method of protecting a person,” said the source.
Kharchenko, under the call sign “Mole”, served in the DPR troops. He was one of the commanders of the intelligence units. Dutch authorities called him the main witness to the 2014 tragedy.
Recall that in 2019, the Ukrainian commandos managed to steal the Vladimir Tsemakh rocket, who was also considered as a witness in the case of the Boeing accident. But in September Zemakh was handed over to Moscow as part of an exchange, and later settled in the DPR territory.
