Mario Isola: The debris could have caused the puncture

One of the memorable episodes of Imola’s career was the departure of Max Verstappen due to rubber problems. Immediately after the end of the race, Pirelli is not ready to name an unequivocal reason for what happened, but they assume that the explosion of the right rear tire on Max’s car was the result of a puncture due to debris on the track.

Mario Izola, Pirelli Race Director: “The exit of the safety car at the end of the race had a great impact on the strategy, although before its appearance it was going to be that most of the riders would cover the distance with a stop, since at Imola there is a big waste of time in the pits.

Due to the significant granulation of the soft formulation, the strategies had to be adjusted in favor of the medium and hard formulations. Riders who climbed the top two steps of the podium started in Medium: these tires showed minimal degradation on long stretches, and on hard tires many riders covered more than forty laps.

Of course, we have to examine the tire of Max Verstappen’s car, which made 32 laps, to understand the cause of what happened. Apparently, debris on the runway could have caused a puncture.

Congratulations to Mercedes for winning a record seventh Constructors’ Cup after another victory after a successful strategy in which Hamilton made perfect use of the virtual safety car.
