In the central match of the second round of the Premier League, London’s Chelsea hosted Liverpool. Most of the Blues rookies aren’t ready to play yet, so Frank Lampard was forced to dispense with their services. He was not in the starting eleven and the newcomer of the guests Thiago, who started the fight on the bench. Immediately after the opening whistle, the “pensioners” took the ball under their control, but they limited themselves to rolling it, without putting pressure on someone else’s penalty area. In one of the episodes, Werner tried to overtake Fabinho and get into a crash position, but he broke the rules in attack.

After a while, Liverpool took the initiative and moved to someone else’s half of the field. The guests were able to take the lead thanks to Arrisabalagi’s mistake at the start: Salah hit the goalkeeper and shot into the goalkeeper’s room, where Firmino hit the ball, but his shot was covered by Christensen. A few minutes later, Kante had a chance to score, but the Frenchman missed it, for some reason he returned the ball to midfield. Then the game died down for a while. The teams took turns in possession of the ball, but did not advance towards each other’s goal.

Over time, the “reds” took the ball completely, but this did not bring any benefit. Standards didn’t help either: none of the services led to a shot on goal. The opponent, on the other hand, launched a dangerous blow from outside the penalty area through Werner’s efforts – the ball flew close to the post. In addition, the hosts had the opportunity to score thanks to a dangerous free kick, but after Havertz’s serve, no one reached the ball.

It seemed that Chelsea were in control of the game and that nothing threatened the team until the end of the first half of the match, but an event occurred that gave the guests a great chance of success. In injury time, Christensen received a direct red card for a foul of last resort. Liverpool did not make a dangerous free kick, but still had the entire half at their disposal in the numerical majority.

Immediately after the break, Jurgen Klopp released Thiago onto the field, who was supposed to help his team open up the opponent’s defense. The goal scored was not long in coming, but the Spanish did not participate in it. Firmino played Salah and served Mane in the head, while Sadio sent the ball into the net – 0: 1. After scoring a goal, Liverpool continued to control the ball in hopes of finishing off the hosts. The rival himself helped to do it after four minutes thanks to the effort of Arrisabalaga. Kepa presented the ball to Mane in the penalty area, and the Senegalese had to hit the empty net – 0: 2.

Having secured a comfortable lead on the scoreboard, Lersisides gave the ball to the Blues. However, Lampard’s barriers did not control him for long, quickly returning the initiative to the opponent. The visiting team could have scored thanks to set pieces, but the serve again posed no threat to Arrisabalaga. Wijnaldum could have scored from the field, after receiving a pass from Firmino and shooting into the near corner, this time Kepa was reliable.

Two minutes later, Mount nearly closed the gap between the “retirees” on the count: The ball whizzed over the crossbar after Mason’s long-range shot. After that, the game calmed down for a while, after which Chelsea had a chance to score, winning a penalty, which was brought in by Thiago. But Jorginho didn’t notice: Alisson drew the blow from captain Chelsea. A few minutes later, the “red” could have also scored from the set, but Alexander-Arnold’s shot after a free kick was inaccurate.

Klopp’s sentries continued to possess the ball heavily in the wrong half of the field, hoping to score a third time. But instead, they almost failed. Abraham received a pass from Werner, improved his position and shot on goal, but Alisson was back up. In the time remaining before the end of the match, the guests no longer gave the opponent a chance to score. The “reds”, in turn, did not realize their moment already in injury time. Arrisabalaga saved his team after Salah hit point-blank range, and Wijnaldum couldn’t adjust to the ball, being the first to shoot. As a result, the Merseysiders celebrated the victory by two goals scored by joining the teams without losses after two games played.

In the third round, Chelsea will play West Bromwich and Liverpool will face another main encounter: a duel with Arsenal.
