At a special event, Apple announced the first laptops based on Apple’s own Silicon processor, dubbed the M1. One of the new products is the 13-inch MacBook Pro, in which the company promises 2.8 times faster processor performance and 5 times faster graphics than the previous generation of the model.
The design of the notebook has not changed and the user can count on the familiar 13.3-inch IPS screen with an aspect ratio of 16:10 and a resolution of 2560×1600 pixels. At the same time, the display provides a maximum brightness of 500 nits, is capable of displaying the DCI-P3 color space, and supports True Tone technology.
As mentioned above, the updated MacBook Pro 13 is based on a new platform with a 5nm Apple M1 processor. It uses a 4-core performance and 4-core energy efficient architecture, as well as 7-core graphics and a 16-core Neural Engine coprocessor to process machine learning tasks. Apple traditionally doesn’t disclose the chip’s operating frequencies, nor does it provide direct comparisons of its performance with its closest competitors. Therefore, the question of the speed of the notebook versus the versions based on Intel processors will remain open until the first real tests.
Other features of the MacBook Pro 13 platform include 8GB of RAM and a 256GB or 512GB SSD. And the wireless options are represented by Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.0 adapters. There are only two connectors on the model’s case, these are Thunderbolt 3 and USB 3.1 Gen 2 with a USB Type-C connector.
The new MacBook Pro 13 uses a backlit magic keyboard for typing and a touch bar instead of function keys. There is also a Touch ID fingerprint scanner for logging in and making purchases through Apple Pay. The laptop’s built-in Face Time webcam remains at 720p, but Apple promises improved video quality with a new image processor on the M1 chip and improved post-processing thanks to the Neural Engine.
The MacBook Pro 13 has a 58.2 Wh internal battery and Apple claims that a full charge will provide 17 hours of wireless browsing and 20 hours of video playback through the Appe TV app. For comparison, in the MacBook Pro 13 2020 with an Intel Core i5 processor and the same battery, the company indicates autonomy in the same tasks at 10 hours. The laptop still charges via either of the two USB Type-C ports, and luckily Apple decided not to remove the full charge from the laptop, so it comes with a 61W charger.
The dimensions of the laptop are 30.41×21.25 cm with a thickness of 1.56 cm and a weight of 1.4 kg.
Sales of the new MacBook Pro 13 begin today, starting in the US market, where the cost of the version with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of internal memory starts at $ 1,299 excluding tax. By adding another $ 200, customers will get the same model but with 512GB of storage. On Apple’s website, you can also configure the MacBook Pro 13, but the additional options will increase the price of the laptop quite a bit. So 16GB of RAM adds $ 200 to the cost of the basic version, and 1 and 2TB SSDs will cost $ 400 and $ 800, respectively.
