Lukashenko presented documents to register the initiative group for the presidential elections in Belarus

The Central Electoral Commission of Belarus has received 14 applications for registration of electoral groups of presidential candidates.

The current President of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, has submitted an application to the country’s Central Election Commission to register his initiative group for the 2020 elections. It is reported Press service of the Central Electoral Commission of Belarus.

Initiative group leader Lukashenko indicated Mikhail Orda.

As said Radio Svaboda is the president of the Belarus Central Electoral Commission, Lidia Yarmoshina, more than 11 thousand people have joined the Lukashenka initiative group. In the previous elections of 2015, there were 10.5 thousand.

The CEC of Belarus received 14 registration requests from electoral groups of presidential candidates. Applications are accepted until May 15.

Since 1994, the President of Belarus has been Alexander Lukashenko. On March 1, 2019, he announced that he intended to run for another term.

Presidential elections in Belarus will be held on August 9, 2020. Initially, the Belarus Central Election Commission planned to hold the election of the head of state on August 30.

Representatives of various political forces believe that holding elections during the coronavirus pandemic is “irresponsible and dangerous”, and therefore they refused to nominate their candidates.

According to the Belarusian Ministry of Health on May 13, 146 patients with COVID-19 died in the country. In total, 25 825 cases of coronavirus infection were recorded in Belarus, 7711 were cured.
