The October Revolution Day is celebrated in Belarus every year. However, this year the word “revolution” was removed from the traditional congratulations of the President of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, considered illegitimate in the United States and Europe.

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko (US and EU do not recognize its legitimacy) removed the word “revolution” from the congratulations on the October Revolution Day. The TUT.BY edition drew attention to this.

The congratulation was posted on Lukashenka’s official website. As TUT.BY points out, before such congratulations the full name of the holiday always sounded: the Day of the October Revolution. However, this year, when protests and mass demonstrations began in the streets of Belarus, Lukashenka congratulated his compatriots on the “Great Day of October”.

As TUT.BY points out, Belarus is the only country in the post-Soviet space (except for the unrecognized Transnistria) where the start of the revolutionary uprising is celebrated on November 7.

Since August 9, in Belarus, the massive protests of those who do not agree with the results of the presidential elections have not stopped. According to official data, Lukashenko won them (the US, EU and Ukraine do not recognize him as the legitimate head of state), for which 80.1% of voters voted. Opposition candidate Svetlana Tikhanovskaya came in second with 10.1% of the vote. At the same time, alternative exit polls showed the opposite picture: Tikhanovskaya’s confident victory.

The Belarusian security forces violently dispersed the rallies using grenades, rubber bullets and water cannons. During the protests, hundreds of protesters were injured and wounded. According to official figures, four protesters died.

Lukashenka assumed the presidency on September 23. For the first time in the history of Belarus, the opening ceremony was not announced or broadcast on television. Several states, including the United States, Great Britain, Canada, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Poland, Denmark, Ukraine and the Czech Republic, did not recognize Lukashenko’s inauguration.
