Lithuania and Poland reacted to Lukashenka's declaration of closing borders

Gypsy Nauseda and Andrzej Duda

The presidents of the two countries discussed yesterday’s statement by the President of Belarus, calling it provocative.

The presidents of Lithuania and Poland, Gitanas Nauseda and Andrzej Duda, recalled that the border with Belarus may be closed from the side of their countries. This was announced on Friday, September 18, by the press service of the Lithuanian leader.

It is noted that Nauseda and Duda discussed the situation in a telephone conversation and thus reacted to the statement of the President of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, on the closure of the border with Lithuania and Poland.

“The authorities of some countries simply forget that the mirror principle operates in international relations. Borders can be closed on both sides,” Nauseda said in the message.

He considers Minsk’s actions “a provocation without any specific motive.”

After discussing the situation, the presidents noted that “there are still no active actions to confirm the threats from Belarus.”

We will recall, on the eve of the night, the President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko said earlier that the republic closes the borders with Poland and Lithuania, while with Ukraine it is strengthened. He also called on the peoples of these countries “to stop their crazy politicians, so that war does not break out.”

However, in the evening, the Lithuanian Ministry of the Interior and the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that the movement of transport across the Lithuanian-Belarusian and Polish-Belarusian borders is proceeding as usual.
