Landing an An-26 with an engine is a normal situation. But low altitude engine failure is dangerous / GORDON

If the An-26 crashed in the Kharkiv region had an engine failure at low altitude, the pilots were in a very difficult situation. Aviation expert Valery Romanenko said this.

The failure of one of the An-26 engines at high altitude does not pose a threat; it is another matter if a critical failure occurred immediately after landing of the aircraft. Then, aviation expert Valeriy Romanenko told Radio Svoboda about the version that technical problems led to the crash of a training plane in Chuguev, Kharkov region.

According to him, landing with an engine off is “a normal situation that is practiced with every pilot.”

“It all depends on the circumstances, on the altitude at which it happened. It’s one thing if it happened at a high altitude, when there is a margin of time, when you can place the main rotor blades downstream. Otherwise, they will create resistance air too high and the aircraft turn very hard to the left, if the left engine fails. And if this happened at low altitude, during landing, then this is already a very difficult situation. Here, it is possible to roll, and you can pull the wingtip to the ground, and in general the plane can turn ahead of the runway itself, “Romanenko analyzes the incident.

Upon landing, the plane has no speed reserve, he explained.

“At high altitude, a running engine shifts to high power and you can keep flying without even lowering the altitude. But when landing, the thrust is minimal. Jet engines react gradually, these are not piston engines like in a car “He hit the pedal and roared. – It is also reactive, it has a much longer reaction time for the gas supply ”, said the expert.

The An-26Sh training plane crashed and caught fire 2 km from the Chuguev military airfield on the night of September 25. On board there were 27 people: seven military personnel (crew members and instructors) and 20 cadets from the Ivan Kozhedub Kharkiv National Air Force University.

26 people died. Lives of the only surviving cadet Vyacheslav Zolochevsky there is no threat.

According to the Security Service of Ukraine, a few minutes before the disaster the aircraft commander reported a left engine failure and requested a landing, however, for an unknown reason, the aircraft crashed on the side of the runway.
