Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk (# 137 WTA) ended her fight at the US Open Tennis Championships.
In the third round match, the 18-year-old lost to former world first racket Naomi Osaka of Japan (No. 9 WTA) in three tense sets.
US Open. Third circle
Marta Kostyuk (Ukraine) – Naomi Osaka (Japan) – 3: 6, 7: 6 (4), 2: 6
The start of the match turned out to be very bright and intriguing. Marta played the role of the first number, Osaka was in no hurry to play aggressively, trying to squeeze out the mistakes of her rival, because she had no special opportunities to counterattack. But the main disadvantage was the problems of the Ukrainian woman with the service. Obviously, she was preoccupied in such a fight, and this is the component that requires special concentration.
In the third game, Marta made two double errors, but still managed to recover, in the fifth, Osaka punished her for such carelessness. But I couldn’t locate it at the reception. Kostyuk tried to accept the second serve of the Japanese woman in the best traditions of Dayana Yastremskaya, but it often resulted in the worst. The really good thing was the game on the net, here Marta was, as always, at her best. Your reaction is something.
The first set was lost and there was practically no hope for a positive end to the match. We all know how confident Osaka is to win matches after winning the opening game. Also, it turned out that Martha was worried about her ankle, during the break between sets she even had to take a medical break.
However, the start of the second set was pretty even. Osaka looked a bit better, but this did not affect the advantage. The key game was the fourth, during which Marta beat her rival’s six breakpoints with great effort. After that, Naomi lost a bit, started making mistakes more often, and didn’t move that well on the court. Marta took the initiative at lightning speed, the serve flew with greater precision, the evening stopped being languid.
In the seventh game, Kostyuk earned a break point for the first time in the match and immediately doubled. The first Naomi recovered thanks to a good serve, but in the second she was a bit unlucky with a little punch. For the first time in the game, the Ukrainian led with a break and went out to serve for the set. Seasoned tennis fans know that the homeless are often overly concerned at such times and the probability of a breakup is extremely high, this match was no exception.
The fate of the match was decided in a tie-break, during which Marta was better and deservedly took the second match, in which she played better than the two-time Grand Slam champion.
The final set started very promising. Even though Martha needed a medical timeout again, she took a 2-1 lead and had a triple breakpoint, and then two regular breakpoints. But every time something was missing, Osaka still managed to defend her serve. That was the end. Not having much experience in such matches, Marta simply did not find the psychological strength to resume the fight. So the match could not be seen, the winner was predetermined.
At the US Open, Marta showed that she had reached a qualitatively new level, Osaka even said after the match that she was already afraid to think about how Kostyuk would play in the future. Yes, even today you could count on victory, if it weren’t for the excitement of the first set, it is much more difficult for a Japanese to win in three matches.
Let’s remember that in 2018 Marta already played in the third round of the majors. It was in Australia, where she lost to Elina Svitolina at age 15.
Recall that Kostyuk was the last Ukrainian at the US Open.
In the next round, Osaka will face Magda Lynette (# 37 WTA) or Anette Kontaveit (# 21 WTA).
