Kiev urgently requested new negotiations with Donbass due to the order of the head of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) to destroy Ukraine’s positions near the demarcation line. TASS reports.
The Ukrainian side will start an extraordinary meeting of the contact group on resolving the situation in Donbass by videoconference on September 6, Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba said. Kiev has already informed the parties about this. He also said that the special representative of the head of the OSCE, Heidi Grau, supported this initiative, and a response from the Russian side is currently awaited.
According to him, the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, is concerned about Pushilin’s order.
As Pushilin reported on September 5, the Ukrainian side did not comply with the justified demands of the DPR and did not eliminate the violations. “In this regard, I officially declare that in accordance with paragraph” e “of the additional measures, I decided to issue an order to open fire on illegally erected engineering structures in the Shumy settlement area,” Pushilin said. He specified that the authorities of the self-proclaimed republic will send an official notification of their decision to the Contact Group.
The DPR had previously warned that it would destroy the Ukrainian army positions if Kiev did not provide a law on the removal of structures erected on the line of contact before September 3. In Donetsk, they claim that Kiev is involved in active engineering teams from their positions, violating the indefinite ceasefire regime.
In 2014, part of the Donetsk and Lugansk regions declared their independence after the change of power in Ukraine. Kiev tried to return them by force and accuses Russia of occupation. The Kremlin rejects the claim.
