Kiev signed the first contract for COVID vaccine

Ukraine has signed a contract for the supply of the Chinese Sinovac vaccine as soon as possible. Vaccinations will be free for citizens.

Ukraine will receive another 1.8 million doses of the COVID-19 vaccine as soon as possible. The Ministry of Health awarded the first contract for the supply of vaccine manufactured by Sinovac Biotech. On Wednesday, December 30, the press service of the Presidency reported.

It is noted that Ukraine will use the Sinovac Biotech vaccine to primarily protect citizens who are at critical risk of infection and those who play critical roles in fighting the pandemic. Vaccinations will be free.

Under the terms of the agreement, the first batch of vaccine in the amount of 700,000 doses will be delivered to Ukraine within 30 days after the official registration in China, or one of the competent authorities of the United States of America, Great Britain, Confederation Switzerland, Japan, Australia, Canada, Israel, India, Mexico, Brazil, or a centralized procedure by the competent authority of the European Union.

Such delivery will be carried out separately from the COVAX mechanism, under which Ukraine is guaranteed to receive 8,000,000 doses of vaccine free of charge.

The contract for the supply to the territory of Ukraine was signed with the Ukrainian pharmaceutical company Lekhim JSC, which, according to official confirmation from Sinovac Biotech, is the only authorized representative of the vaccine manufacturer in Ukraine. We are talking about the purchase of 1,800,000 doses at a price of 504 UAH per dose.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy promised to launch a large-scale state vaccination program in a short time.

It is noted that Ukraine continues an active negotiation process with all reputable manufacturers to increase Ukraine’s access to an effective and safe vaccine.

The Sinovac Biotech vaccine (CoronaVac) is an inactivated vaccine that is produced in a syringe and stored at temperatures between +2 and +8 degrees Celsius. Clinical trials conducted in different countries, according to the results of intermediate data, showed the effectiveness of the drug up to 97%. Therefore, phase III clinical trials were conducted in Indonesia (1600 patients, efficiency 97%) and Turkey (1325 patients, efficiency 91%). Phase III clinical trials in Brazil are finalizing and interim results are expected on January 7, 2021.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health clarified that they intend to buy 1 million 913 doses of the vaccine from Sinovac Biotech.

It was previously reported that the Turkish authorities decided to make urgent purchases of the Chinese coronavirus vaccine by Sinovac Biotech Ltd.
