Moscow’s occupation of part of Georgia’s sovereign territory also casts doubt on the effectiveness of Russia’s “peacekeeping” role.

The Russian authorities, which have occupied part of the territories of Ukraine and Georgia, cannot call their military in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict zone “peacekeepers”. This was stated by the Permanent Representative of Ukraine to international organizations in Vienna, Yevhen Tsymbalyuk, during the meeting of the OSCE Permanent Council on Thursday, November 12.

“The Russian Federation, which continues its aggressive actions against Ukraine, <...> It has no legal or moral basis to call its military units, now deployed in the Nagorno-Karabakh region, “peacekeepers,” he said.

The politician also emphasized that Moscow’s continued occupation of a part of sovereign Georgian territory casts doubt on the effectiveness of Russia’s “peacekeeping” role in general and the South Caucasus region in particular.

“This discredits the concept of a peacekeeping mission as such in the sense of international law in general and the UN Charter in particular,” Tsymbalyuk said.

At the same time, the permanent representative confirmed Ukraine’s unconditional support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Azerbaijan “within its internationally recognized borders”.

Recall, on November 9, the President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, the Prime Minister of Armenia, Nikol Pashinyan, and the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin, signed a joint declaration on the total cessation of hostilities in Nagorno-Karabakh. The Azerbaijani and Armenian sides will remain in their occupied positions and nearly two thousand Russian peacekeepers will be deployed in the region.
