KIEV, December 17 – RIA Novosti. Kharkiv Mayor Gennady Kernes died at the age of 62. As his friend Pavel Fuks said, the cause of death was the consequences of the transferred COVID-19: the infection led to complications in the work of vital organs. The information was confirmed by the secretary of the Kharkiv City Council, Igor Terekhov. In mid-September, the director of the Department of Information and Public Relations of the Kharkiv City Council, Yuriy Sidorenko said that Kernes had contracted the coronavirus and was in a serious and constant condition. It soon emerged that he was conscious and that he was being treated at the Charite clinic in Berlin. Kernes tested negative for COVID-19 in October. From the moment of hospitalization, the Kharkov chief did not appear in public. As Fuchs said late last week, Kernes’s condition worsened and his second kidney failed. Kernes won the Kharkiv mayoral elections in 2010, 2015 and 2020. In April 2014, an attempt was made on his life: Kernes was seriously wounded, the bullet went through him, damaging his lung and liver. He was treated in Israel, underwent a rehabilitation course, after which he returned to Kharkov. Due to his injuries, he moved in a wheelchair.
