The Japanese government, headed by Shinzo Abe, resigned. Today, September 16, the country’s parliament intends to elect a new prime minister.

It is reported by the Kyodo agency.

The newly elected chairman of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party, Yoshihide Suga, is expected.

“We will overturn the vertical separation of government agencies, corporate interests and the principle of precedent, and we will also promote regulatory reform,” Suga said.

Japanese media, citing sources, report that at least nine of the 18 members of the government will retain their positions in the new cabinet.

Yoshihide Suga has already outlined the priority tasks facing the country: overcoming the pandemic and recovering the economy.

Note that former Japanese Prime Minister Abe has been battling ulcerative colitis for several years. In mid-July 2020, he already said that his condition worsened.

Earlier it was learned that Abe was in the hospital twice in two weeks, where he was examined. In 2007, he had already left the post of prime minister due to ulcerative colitis.

We will remember, last year, Abe said that he would leave politics in 2021 after the expiration of the prime minister’s term.

He argued that he was not going to run for the position of leader of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (PLD). In Japan, the head of government automatically becomes head of the ruling party.

One of his assignments as Prime Minister Abe called the conclusion of a peace treaty with Russia after World War II.
