In Milan, an appeals court acquitted Ukraine’s National Guard Vitaly Markiv, accused of murdering journalist Andrea Rocchelli and his translator during hostilities near Slavyansk in 2014.

Ombudsman Lyudmila Denisova wrote about this on her Telegram. According to her, the Ukrainian will soon return to his homeland.

The Markiv National Guard case: chronology of events

  • The deputy platoon commander of the first operational battalion of the Kulchitsky National Guard, Sergeant Major Markiv, was arrested on June 30, 2017 in Italy on suspicion of the murder of the Italian journalist Rocchelli and the Russian translator Andrei Mironov, which took place on 24 May 2014 near Slavyansk.
  • On July 12, 2019, a jury in Italy sentenced Markiv to 24 years in prison.
  • On November 20, Ukraine filed an appeal against Markiv’s ruling. Examination of the appeal by the Lombardy District Court of Appeal was scheduled for spring 2020. However, the start of the appeal process was blocked due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • On September 12, it emerged that Markiv’s lawyers presented new exculpatory evidence to the Milan Court of Appeal.
  • On October 1, the Milan Court of Appeal ordered a new translation of Markiv’s interrogations and conversations in connection with the fact that the translator who translated his testimony refused to translate it.
  • On October 15, the third session of the Court of Appeal was held in Milan, in which the conclusions of a study on Markiv’s conversation with a cellmate about the death of an Italian reporter were known.
  • On October 24, the fourth appeal hearing was held, during which his attorneys provided conclusive evidence of his innocence.
