Ukrainian midfielder Taras Stepanenko shared his emotions for his team’s victory over Switzerland (2: 1) in their debut match in Division A of the Nations League.
“Almost immediately after the rally from the gate, the Swiss were under pressure. We, especially in the first half, had enough marriage. But, nevertheless, in the second half of the match we added a little and, when we cut the pressing players, we managed to create good chances, and very often we reached the opposite goal.
I will not say that some comments on our part were a matter of mutual understanding. Now the coaching staff insists that since we entered the top group of the Nations League, we played not only through long passes, but also came out of defense with a short pass, without being afraid to do so.
In modern football, if you just hit the ball, you will not achieve a positive result. Nobody was afraid of us, they all opened up. It didn’t always work out, but this is a great credit to the opponent. However, we managed to cope with the pressure. I think at the end of the first half and generally in the second half, we played through a pass.
Everything takes time. It is impossible to achieve the desired result in one day. I think today there was an excellent mutual understanding, a safety net and we had a good fight, ”said Stepanenko.
