In early autumn, Yuri Vernidub unexpectedly left Shakhtar Saligorsk, who was in first place in the Belarusian championship. At the same time, he immediately announced that he intended to take a short break, after which he was ready to dive back into work. The specialist did not hide that he wanted to continue working in Ukraine and, according to our information, even held negotiations with the owner of Rukh Grigory Kozlovsky, but again, unexpectedly for many, he headed the Sheriff of Moldova.
When this interview was recorded, it was not announced that the 54-year-old stuntman would continue his career in Moldova.
– Yuri Nikolaevich, tell us where you are now. And what are your plans
– Now I am in Ukraine, in Zaporozhye, at home with my wife alone. Everyone is safe and sound, thank goodness. There are plans. We are considering various options and thinking about them.
– Can you hint whether there are options from Ukraine or from abroad?
– Not from Ukraine, only from abroad.
– Is this the European vector or the CIS countries?
– These are the CIS countries.
– Everyone is interested to know why you left Shakhtar Salihorsk. Can you shed some light on this already?
– I made that decision then. I’ve already given interviews, I don’t want to talk about it. He went and he left. It’s my right. I decided to do this and thank God for everything.
– Did you have any conflict with the club?
– We are fine. I left Shakhtar without fights or conflicts. After the championship, the team congratulated me, the president and the sports director.
– How would you rate the fact that Shakhtar won the Belarusian championship? After all, you made this team.
– Of course, I wanted to finish all this myself. But since circumstances played out like this … In round 22, our coaching staff worked with Shakhtar. We have worked a lot with this team. And then our Ukrainian coach, a pretty good specialist Roman Grigorchuk, worked with Shakhtar for eight rounds. I am glad for him that he completed the task I started to do. When I left, the team was in first place and still became the champion of Belarus. It is the most important thing!
– Roman Grigorchuk said that you have a good relationship with him, that you are calling. Did you say something to him during the championship?
– Let this also stay between us. Roman Grigorchuk is also a fairly adult and experienced coach. We speak simply, we identify everything. You made this decision and did the right thing. Right away, when I was told that Grigorchuk would possibly accept Shakhtar, I said it was a good choice. And the most important thing is that Shakhtar became champion. Everything else is already an illusion.
– You said the captain of the Shakhtar called you and the team congratulated you over the loudspeaker. Is it nice to receive such congratulations?
– Of course. The entire team, represented by the captain, congratulated me and the entire coaching staff on the loudspeaker for the championship. They appreciated all the work done and the conviction that the team will continue to be champion. And they succeeded. It is the most important.
– With you, Shakhtar conceded few goals and scored decently. How did you manage to improve the game in defense and attack, to create that balance?
– When we arrived, the team formation changed dramatically. This means that the work we did in training camp and in the winter offseason has paid off. It’s wonderful and good that we had a segment where the team played 17 rounds without a loss. This means that we have chosen the correct vector and Roman Grigorchuk, as they say, just completed it.

– There was also a decent segment where Shakhtar didn’t miss many matches in a row.
– Yes, indeed, the team did not concede goals in eight or nine games in a row.

– How would you rate Zorya’s performance in the Europa League?
– In principle, Zorya won two matches. I think the Lugansk team had a pretty serious group. Leicester still represents the English Premier League and is a good club. And Braga constantly takes prizes in the Portuguese championship. AEK himself is not an easy opponent. I think maybe at first something didn’t work somewhere. But then Zorya won two matches in a row against AEK and Leicester. It costs a lot. Lugansk residents entered points into the common piggy bank of Ukraine and this is the most important thing.
– What do you think about the match Zorya vs Desna for the Ukrainian Cup?
– I think that, by right, Zorya qualified for the quarterfinals of the Ukrainian Cup. As for the Ukrainian championship, as Viktor Skrypnyk also noted, the team showed good results in a month and returned its former name, as well as what it was famous for. Therefore, the results are as follows. Yes, there is a difference of three points from third place, but the Luhansk team has a reserve game with Olimpik. But the whole fight is yet to come!
– Will Zorya repeat last year’s success this season and take bronze?
– Why not? I think that Zorya is one of the main candidates for the third position at UPL.
– After the match with Desna, Vladlen Yurchenko criticized the work of the Ukrainian referees, saying that they do not know how to work with the VAR. What you think? Do you have something to work on?
– I think there is a lot of work to do. With VAR, there seems to be more transparency. The system can detect some errors. But on the other hand, these long breaks and reviews … I think we have to improve the work of the VAR. There is much to learn. I hope everything changes for the better.
– What can you say about the performance of Dynamo and Shakhtar in the Champions League?
– Decent performance. Our teams had some of the strongest groups. They played against such eminent opponents: Real, Barcelona, Juventus, Inter, Borussia Mönchengladbach. They worked well. It’s a shame only for Shakhtar. Not long enough to make the Champions League playoffs. And the Dynamo is a young team. Footballers have gained tremendous experience. The Kievans haven’t played in the Champions League for a long time. The Dynamo got off to a good start to show good results in the Champions League in the future. And next year, if he gets into the group stage of the Champions League, you have to try to advance.

– What can you say about the Dynamo with Lucescu? Did the Kiev game improve?
– Definitely. I really like how Lucescu works. He did a tremendous job with Dynamo. I hope that after the winter low season, the people of Kiev will be even better. If they get stronger, this season the Dynamo have every chance of becoming the champion of Ukraine.
– What do you think of the Europa League draw? Will Dynamo play Club Brugge and Shakhtar play Maccabi?
– Dynamo and Club Brugge are two identical teams at the moment. The chances are 50 to 50. Club Brugge had a rather difficult group in the Champions League and showed good football. In the same way as Dynamo Kiev. In the second pair, I will give preference to Shakhtar. I think the Pitmen will advance further.
– Can you value Luis Castro’s work with Shakhtar?
– That year the team became champion with him. This year they are in second place and they are slightly behind first place. The whole fight is ahead. But what did Shakhtar show in the Champions League! I think it is quite good to beat Real Madrid twice.
– But there were also two defeats for Borussia …
“But you see, this is football. I think the situation with the pandemic also played a role here. Still, how many players fought before the game with Borussia. Many young people played. I think this is one of the main reasons.
– Another Ukrainian coach, Sergei Rebrov, also made me happy at times. What can you say about Rebrov and his “Ferencvaroš”?
– I think he’s a very good coach. This is the man who worked for two years at the Dynamo, became a two-time champion with the Kiev club. After his departure, the people of Kiev were not champions. Now there is a possibility with Lucescu. And now in the Hungarian championship “Ferencvaros” is showing good results. They are in first place with a decent margin. I think there will be the third consecutive Ferencvaros championship with Rebrov. I am sure of this, knowing Sergei, his ambitions and his approach to his work. I think he looks very good in his place, as a coach, as a specialist. I think the level is growing very well.
– Your son has a school for boys in Zaporozhye. How are things going there?
– Yes, this is my son’s project. I hope this school continues to develop in the future. Maybe you made the right decision. Vitalik loves football so much that he decided to create a school for children. It costs a lot. I wish him more health and success at Zarya, as well as the development of his soccer school.
– Due to the pandemic, we met many new Ukrainian footballers. Who surprised you
– Ilya Zabarny. Shaparenko himself played in a new way under Lucescu. It shows quite a good football. It costs a lot. And our Ukrainian students appear on Shakhtar. Kornienko himself. The only thing, the wound knocked him down a bit. And then it looks good enough.
– Three great Bushchan goalkeepers, Neshheret and Trubin were also good …
– I think this is due to the fact that now in the Ukrainian championship there are fewer foreign players, that is, good foreign players. This gives our young Ukrainians the opportunity to develop. There is a good chance to take hold of giants like Dynamo and Shakhtar and move on. The same Ukrainian team, look how they added! The Ukrainian team looks much more interesting.
