Hungarian “Ferencváros” head coach Sergey Rebrov, who helped the Budapest club reach the Champions League group stage for the first time in two decades, gave a great and interesting interview to the Great Football program.
– Of course, this is an incredible event for Hungary. Unfortunately, everything happened without spectators. You yourself saw how 5-6 thousand fans came to the match against Dinamo Zagreb and against Molde, who stood behind the stadium and supported the team. It was an amazing vacation here.
– The fans chant your name and call you the legend of the club. How about this role?
– Unfortunately, I don’t understand the language. It is much easier for me to work with this here. I don’t read newspapers, I don’t watch the news, as it is easier for me to work here than in Ukraine. Viktor Leonenko is not there.
– What happened after the game? We saw that there was a lot of champagne in the dressing room, how did Ferencváros celebrate this party?
– I congratulated the boys and left. This is a fantastic vacation for them, the head coach doesn’t need to be there. They relaxed, gave free rein to emotions. As you can imagine, before the last Champions League qualifying game, I remembered that apart from Zubkov, no other player had ever played in the Champions League. Zubkov didn’t play much either, but he was the only one there. This is a great success for them. What they did, I did not follow.
– Who called you from Ukraine? Who congratulated for reaching the Champions League?
– Many people wrote to me, not all of them dared to call. I spoke with the president of the Kiev Dynamo, Igor Surkis. For Ferencváros as well as for me, this is a great success. Passing four classifications with the best teams in Europe, with the champions of their countries, this is a very good indicator.
– According to some information, you wanted to play with Dynamo in the group. Then we read your rebuttal. Did they want it or not?
– At the post-match press conference, I was asked a question about the Ukrainian teams. We could get on them, and I said I didn’t care. But still, I didn’t want to meet with Ukrainian teams. Points are needed for both us and the Ukrainian teams. Now when the Dynamo came into our group, it’s a difficult feeling. This is my native team and someone in these games will lose points, which means it will be quite insulting. We will seriously prepare for both Dynamo and Juventus with Barcelona.
– How unusual will it be for you to play against Mircea Lucescu, who runs the Dynamo?
– I will play against Dynamo Kiev. I don’t pay attention to who the head coach is.
– You wanted so much: Barcelona and Juventus?
– I think the fans wanted it. If you look at the first and second basket, those rivals were waiting for us anyway. Normal draw, we will play. Let me remind you: Ferencvaros has not been in the Champions League for 25 years. No matter which teams were caught, they would still be stronger in class than us. You need to seriously prepare and give all your strength.
– You were the number one contender for the position of head coach of the Dynamo. You can open the curtain: why didn’t you become one?
– As Grigory Mikhailovich said, we both made the right decision. Both me and Dynamo Kiev. Ferencvaros got into the Champions League, so my choice was right. In the offseason, I couldn’t leave the team at the last minute. I saw that I needed this equipment and it was important to finish this cycle. I’m glad I stayed and given so much joy to all of Hungary. What happens next, we’ll see. But this decision was correct for both Dynamo and me.
– Do you manage to follow the Dynamo games?
– Yes, today I saw the game with Zorya, 60 minutes, of course, I follow the Dynamo. I did not hide it. Even if Dynamo hadn’t been included in our group, I would have continued to follow my team.
– How do you rate Dynamo at the level of play now? I like it?
– I’m not going to judge. Compared to last year, of course, everyone can see the difference. There is discipline on the field, the organization of the game. Even with the same players as last year. Everyone can see the difference.
– At what level is Ferencvaros? Are you fit for the Champions League?
– Now there will be a break for the national teams’ matches. It will be a serious test for both the national teams and the players. Ferencváros played qualifying, two games a week. Then the same month will be difficult, after the matches of the national teams. I hope the players arrive without injuries and we have time to seriously prepare for the start of the Champions League and the continuation of the Hungarian Championship.
– Your wife congratulated you and your team for entering the Champions League on social media. She recalled that 10 years ago she said that as a coach you will advance with your team to the group stage of the Champions League. What story is this?
– I asked Ani, she was overwhelmed by emotions. I can’t help but express your opinion. She was in the game, she supported me afterwards. My children also supported me.
