Iran completes investigation into UIA disaster

UIA plane shot down by Iranian military on January 8, 2020

The Iranian investigation accuses 10 people of being involved in the UIA disaster, including senior military commanders.

Iran’s Military Prosecutor’s Office has completed its investigation into the Ukraine International Airlines plane crash. An indictment is already being prepared. This was stated by the head of the Judicial-Legal Organization of the Iranian Armed Forces, Shokrollah Bahrami, the ISNA news agency reported on Saturday, February 20.

“The investigation of the case of the Ukrainian plane crash was completed in the military prosecutor’s office. After the preliminary investigation, the trial will begin in the presence of the accused and their relatives,” he said.

At the same time, Bahrami did not specify whether the court will be open or closed.

As Radio Farda clarifies, the Iranian investigation accuses ten people of being involved in the UIA disaster, among them senior military commanders. There is only one person detained.

The day before, the Foreign Ministry said that Ukraine wants to resolve the situation with the UIA with Iran without a trial, but this may take up to five years.

Furthermore, the Attorney General’s Office complained that only Ukraine is investigating the UIA disaster.

Recall that on January 8, 2020, a Boeing 737-800 aircraft of the Ukrainian airline UIA was shot down by two missiles fired by the Iranian army. The plane has just taken off from Tehran airport and is heading to Kiev. On board were 167 passengers and 9 crew members, all dead.
