Of course, Apple today introduced the iPhone 12 smartphones. As Apple boss Tim Cook said, the new generation ushers in a new era: the introduction of 5G support (it will be on all models), which was dedicated to a considerable part of the presentation (but in Ukraine 5G will not appear soon) … In this post, about the base model iPhone 12, which was first introduced after the mini version of the HomePod speaker.
The iPhone 12 is an update to last year’s iPhone 11 with a little redesign and improved specs. The design came as no surprise – we’ve seen all of this in recent months, and the final versions of the iPhone 12 were leaked online a few hours earlier. ad.
The novelty, in general, inherited the design of its predecessor with a rectangular cutout on the screen for the TrueDepth camera and a square block for the main camera in the upper left corner of the rear panel, but received a body of a different shape – with flat edges, like iPhone 4 too the latest iPad Pro and iPad Air models.
Compared to the iPhone 11, the iPhone 12 is 11% thinner, 15% smaller and 16% lighter.
The iPhone 12 features a 6.1-inch OLED screen with a resolution of 2532 × 1170 pixels, a total of 2.8 million pixels, which is twice the pixel density of iPhone 11. The pixel density is 460 pixels per inch, the maximum brightness is 1200 cd / metertwo, contrast – 2,000,000: 1. The display’s brand name remains the same: Super Retina XDR. Support for Dolby Vision content is also announced.
The screen is protected by a special Ceramic Shield coating, created in cooperation with Corning (manufacturer of Gorilla Glass). It is a special protective coating that has been reinforced with ceramic crystals.
According to Apple, the “ceramic shield” is stronger than any protective glass used in modern smartphones, and with it, iPhones are “stronger than ever.” Based on its own test results, Apple claims that if you accidentally drop your iPhone 12 while taking it out of your pocket, the Ceramic Shield is four times more likely to survive the drop without damage. That is, in fact, there are no guarantees, and for a better assessment of endurance, it is worth waiting for independent drop tests.
The hardware foundation of the iPhone 12 and other models in the lineup is the 5nm SoC A14 Bionic, like the recently launched fourth-generation iPad Air tablet. Apple traditionally calls it the fastest in the industry, both in terms of CPU and GPU. In both cases, the same superiority is declared: 50%. Apple paid special attention to the work of the A14 Bionic in machine learning tasks, where the performance of the new SoC reaches 11 trillion operations per second. The NPU now contains sixteen instead of eight cores, providing an 80% increase in performance on corresponding tasks. They also pointed out that the A14 Bionic consists of 11.8 billion transistors, but we already know that.
During the presentation, the launch of Riot Games’ League of Legends game (clearly to replace the outcast Fortnite) was announced.
The main camera of the iPhone 12 is still dual with wide-angle and ultra-wide-angle modules of the same resolution: 12 megapixels. At the same time, it advertises the iPhone 12’s dual camera as new. On the other hand, Apple has selected a fast 7-element wide-angle lens that captures 27% more light and offers greater detail and dynamic range in low light conditions.

Thanks to the more advanced NPU in the A14 Bionic, engineers have significantly improved the iPhone 12’s camera capabilities, especially in terms of night shooting, and now on top of that there is a new mode called Time-lapse Night Mode. This is a night time lapse that can also be used on a wide angle camera. The camera is also capable of recording videos in 4K HDR or Dolby Vision at 60 frames per second. In addition, night mode and Deep Fusion technology now work on both the ultra-wide camera and the front camera.
Another new feature on iPhone 12 is MagSafe wireless charging technology with precise magnetic positioning. The eponymous technology was used on the MacBook – the magnetic connector provided a quick connection and prevented the laptop from falling off if the cable was accidentally pulled out, but with the switch to MagSafe’s Thunderbolt 3 on laptops they refused.
With iPhone 12, MagSafe technology has a second life. Now it’s a whole ecosystem of cases, wireless chargers, and other accessories that use MagSafe magnets. MagSafe power: up to 15 W, there is Qi compatibility, but in this case the power is half. Read more about MagSafe in a separate newsletter.
Fast wired charging is also supported – 50% in half an hour.
As expected, there will be no headphones or power adapter in the iPhone 12 box. All for nature. The USB-C to Lightning cable is still part of the standard package. Incidentally, the packaging has become much more compact thanks to the abandonment of headphones and a power adapter.
Protection against water and dust according to IP68 standard (withstands submersion to a depth of 2 meters for up to 30 minutes) – on site. The iPhone 12’s bezel is still aluminum with new antennas and the back is still tempered glass.
Flash memory is still 64, 128 or 256 GB. The amount of RAM, such as the battery capacity, Apple, as usual, does not indicate, we will find out later in the TENAA database.
The dimensions of the iPhone 12 are 146.7×71.5×7.4 mm and it weighs 164 g
Like its predecessor, the iPhone 11, the new iPhone 12 features a wide color gamut. There are five body colors to choose from: Black, White, Product Red, Green and New Blue.
The iPhone 12 in the US starts at $ 799 for the 64GB version for Verizon and AT&T subscribers, while the regular price is $ 829. That’s $ 129 more than the initial price of the iPhone 11. The 128GB and 256GB storage options cost $ 879 and $ 979, respectively. Pre-orders will open on Friday, October 16, with actual sales beginning exactly one week later, on October 23.
The timing of the sale of the iPhone 12 in Ukraine and the hryvnia prices have not yet been announced.
