IOC shocked by the execution of an Iranian fighter

The death penalty for a 27-year-old athlete was carried out in the Adel-Abad prison in southern Iran

The athlete was executed on the morning of September 12. The IOC asked the Iranian authorities not to carry out the sentence.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) is shocked by the execution of the Iranian fighter Navid Afkari. This was reported by TASS on Saturday, September 12, citing an IOC statement published by the organization’s press service.

“The IOC is shocked by today’s statement. IOC President Thomas Bach this week personally addressed the Supreme Leader and the President of Iran and asked for mercy for Navid Afkari, respecting the sovereignty of the country,” the statement said. The committee expressed its condolences to Afkari’s family and friends.

According to a press release, IOC President Thomas Bach previously wrote to the Supreme Leader and President of Iran asking for forgiveness for the athlete, adding that he respects the sovereignty of the Islamic Republic. However, the Iranian authorities ignored this request.

The death sentence against Afkari, 27, was carried out in the Adel-Abad prison in the southern Iranian city of Shiraz.

According to Iranian justice, in 2018, during protests in Shiraz, Afkari killed a law enforcement officer. He later confessed to the crime, authorities said. However, the athlete himself, his family and human rights organizations indicated that the confession was made under torture. Brothers Afkari Wahid and Khabib were sentenced to 54 and 27 years in prison. In addition, they were sentenced to 74 lashes.
