The carcass of a woolly rhinoceros in Yakutia was found when it fell as a result of a coastal collapse during the thawing of permafrost. Scientists from Japan and Sweden will study the findings.
In the Republic of Yakutia in the Russian Federation, in August 2020, scientists found a well-preserved woolly rhinoceros. Valery Plotnikov, a lead researcher in the mammoth fauna research department of the Academy of Sciences, told this on Yakutia TV channel 24 before the new year.
According to him, the corpse fell as a result of the coastal collapse during the thaw of the permafrost.
“The conservation is good, better than that of the previously found specimens of the rhinoceros Kolyma and Sasha. Perhaps it belongs to the late Pleistocene,” said the scientist.
The rhinoceros has preserved all the limbs, part of the internal organs, the horn and the thick hair. Scientists have determined by the teeth that the age of the animal is three to four years. Delicate the rhino is not hungry, it could fall into a swamp or ravine.
“If we make an analogy with modern rhinos, which live between 40 and 50 years, then the specimen found was approximately in its teens. The lactation period is over, it ate, ate grass, but most likely it lived with its mother, “Plotnikov said. …
The find will be brought to Yakutsk in January, where scientists will take tissue samples and conduct necessary research, then plan to ship the rhino to Stockholm.
“We have been cooperating with the Swedish scientist Love Dalen for a long time and previously we sent him the lion cubs found in Yakutia. He is again ready to actively participate in the study,” Plotnikov said.
A paleontologist from Japan will participate in the study, he was invited to perform a tomography.
