The Ministry of Health clarified who will carry out the PCR studies and who will undergo tests for the determination of antigens.

The Ministry of Health has decided to change the approaches to coronavirus testing. What exactly changed was reported by Chief Medical Officer Viktor Lyashko.

From now on, PCR tests will be performed on Ukrainians with:

  • suspected COVID-19;

  • signs of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS);

  • signs of other acute respiratory viral infections;

  • signs of pneumonia.

Rapid antigen tests will be done in people with:

  • suspected COVID-19;

  • signs of SARS;

  • signs of other acute respiratory viral infections;

  • signs of pneumonia;

Antigen testing will also be performed on those who have been in close contact with a COVID-19 patient who is returning from regions with a significant spread of COVID-19 and is subject to a planned hospitalization.

Citizens who test positive for the antigen will need to confirm coronavirus infection with a PCR test.

“An exception is the positive result of a rapid test for the determination of the SARS-CoV-2 antigen in patients who meet the definition of a suspected or probable case of COVID-19,” said Lyashko.

In addition, rapid antigen testing is allowed for screening of healthcare workers and other categories of workers and for planned hospitalization.

Earlier, the head of the Health Ministry, Maxim Stepanov, said that fewer tests for the coronavirus have started in Ukraine, as fewer Ukrainians are infected with the coronavirus and getting sick less.
