The new strain of coronavirus, which the UK announced on December 14, was discovered in September. However, they did not give importance to this.
Public Health Service England specialist Dr Susan Hopkins told Sky News about this.
«The mutation was first detected in the patient in September and the entire genome was deciphered in October, ”he said.
According to Hopkins, the experts did not pay attention to this, since viruses often mutate. However, until the end of November, outbreaks of a new type of COVID-19 were recorded in Kent County and the incidence did not decrease, despite the restrictions imposed. The government was only informed on December 11.
Hopkins said this type of COVID-19 was found mainly in London and eastern England, but has also been reported in small numbers across all regions of England, Wales and Scotland.
In the context of the spread of a new strain of coronavirus, which has been found in the UK, Prime Minister Boris Johnson said that a lockdown will be introduced in London and south-east England from December 20. He states that a new mutation in the virus could be 70% more infectious. At the same time, the WHO assures that it is not more deadly.
A new strain of coronavirus has also been found in the Netherlands, Denmark, and Australia.
The Netherlands, Belgium, Italy and Austria have already announced the suspension of passenger air travel to the UK due to a new mutation of the COVID-19 virus.
