The country’s former president, Almazbek Atambayev, was arrested in Kyrgyzstan. He is suspected of organizing riots in Bishkek, the Kyrgyz State Committee for National Security reported on Saturday 10th October.
According to media reports, special forces arrived at Atambayev’s home in Koi-Tash, 20 kilometers from Bishkek.
“As a result of the operational search measures carried out by the State Committee for National Security together with the Ministry of the Interior of the Kyrgyz Republic <...> Atambayev Almazbek, Sagymbaev K. and Musakeev D. were arrested, “the press release reads.
It is also reported that his assistant Farid Niyazov was arrested.
On the eve of Atambayev’s adviser Kunduz Zholdubaeva said the politician had been killed and his car had been shot with live ammunition. According to the former president, he was aware of the impending attack.
Shooting clashes between protesters were previously reported to have started in Bishkek. A massive brawl broke out in the square, supporters of various parties throw stones and bottles at each other.
