The four-legged Spot robot walked around the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in protective shoe covers.

In the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone, an autonomous Boston Dynamics “Spot” robot was tested for the first time to measure the level of radiation contamination. This four-legged apparatus was handed over to Ukrainian specialists by a research group at the University of Bristol.

In addition to the yellow-black robot dog, the scientists also used unmanned aerial vehicles, ground robotic systems, and scanner sensors. This was reported to the State Agency of Ukraine for the Management of the Exclusion Zone.

All this technique has been used to evaluate the distribution of radioactive materials in an area and in space (gamma spectrometer, lidar, photogrammetry, hyperspectral and neutron sensors).

Radiometric and geophysical work was carried out on the territory of two sectors of the temporary containment point “Red Forest” for radioactive waste and on the radioactive waste dumps “Podlesny” and “Buryakovka”.

Also, the famous Spot was “walked” on the territory of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. The robot dog traveled the hallways of the block with special protective shoe covers, like other station employees.

The Spot robot with its mechanical “equipment” will provide researchers with 3-D images and maps of the distribution of radionuclide activity in two RWDFs, and will also display images of RWDW sites with a high dose rate.

This will allow researchers to update maps of the distribution of radiation contamination in the surveyed areas.

We previously wrote that the radiation at Chernobyl turned out to be more dangerous than we thought, and after the investigation, scientists raised the alarm.

We will remember, recently, scientists from Great Britain have created a unique robot chemist, who has already made his own discovery.
