On Galindez Island in Antarctica, where the Akademik Vernadsky Station is located, an ice rim broke off the Woozle Hill Glacier.

This was reported on the Facebook page of the National Center for Antarctic Sciences.

It should be noted that, according to experienced polar explorers, this is the first time that a detachment of such a scale has occurred in this area. The height of the part of the break is about 20 meters, it is almost like a 7-story building. Width – 5 meters. The rift at the place of the split has existed for a long time, so our scientists constantly observed the glacier.

The study of natural ice in Antarctica is one of the constant research directions of Ukrainian polar explorers. Scientists observe how glaciers change: they melt or, on the contrary, grow, how fast it happens, how cracks form, where the ice moves, etc.“, – explained in the scientific center.

This research is important because glaciers “inform” about climate change around the world.

As reported by “Apostrophe”, due to global warming, algae are spreading in Antarctica, actively flourishing. Its green color on melting ice is visible even from space.
