The American automaker Chevrolet (part of General Motors) has finalized its eCrate project to series production. As a result, starting in the second half of 2021, everyone will be able to purchase a kit to convert their ICE car into an electric car and install it in authorized services. As an example of this modernization, engineers from the Chevrolet Performance division introduced the 1977 Chevrolet K5 Blazer SUV.
When creating the Chevrolet K5 Blazer-E, engineers removed a 175-hp 6.5-liter V8 engine, a three-speed automatic, fuel and exhaust systems and replaced them with an electric motor, battery, and other components necessary for an electric vehicle. . According to the creators, about 90% of the new systems are factory Chevrolet Bolt EV components. As a result, the SUV received an electric motor with a capacity of 200 hp. and a torque of 360 Nm, as well as a battery of 60 kWh (400 V) with liquid cooling.
Chevrolet Performance said it plans to expand the eCrate line with configurations with electric motors of various capacities and batteries of various sizes, which will be suitable for transforming various ICE models. In the future, these kits will include new Ultium modular batteries.
As a reminder, the company previously released the Chevrolet E-10 and Chevrolet eCOPO Camaro electric concepts, built on the basis of the ICE models.
