– How did you react to the losses of France and Germany?
– Of course, the biggest problem was the staff situation. Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, 14 Shakhtar players left, many of them are representatives of the Ukraine national team. When we found out about this, somehow we couldn’t change the situation. It was very difficult to call someone or find new staff. I had to fly to Paris, upon arrival, we passed the tests and found out that even those who joined had been infected with coronavirus. We have suffered too great a loss of personnel. There was also a problem with psychology, as we did not know if the match would take place. It was not clear to us the protocol in France, if the match would be allowed.
Playing with such a strong opponent, who was preparing for the match, at his home in a great stadium, was difficult for us. If we talk about the game, the result is definitely unsatisfactory. I think conceding seven goals is a lot. After the game, I had a serious conversation with the guys. Those who enter the field must be held accountable for the outcome. This is the face of our team. I think the score is very great. We showed good football at times and had a bit of bad luck in the implementation. In turn, the French played very well and realized all their possibilities.
– Do you think this game would be better?
– I think it was not worth canceling the game. UEFA and FIFA are working hard to keep football going. Such a cancellation would be a bad precedent. We have suffered great losses. It is practically impossible for us to play the world champions without our main players. The loss of one or two players seriously affects the quality of our game, while we have lost 7-8 players from the main squad. I had to play young guys who are between 18 and 19 years old. We understood the whole situation and we took risks. I hope that even playing with such a good opponent, the guys, having gained experience, will understand in what mood they need to enter the field and what mistakes should not be made against such opponents.
– What is the use of the national team in such a game?
We need to clear the account. We were able to demonstrate the structural game that we are establishing in the national team. The mistakes that were made are the experience gained by the boys. We analyze the game a lot, we show it, we tell it: this is the positive. If you don’t play with such rivals, don’t make mistakes, then you won’t have growth. The Ukrainian championship is not giving us anything now. There is no such rhythm, there are no players of such quality. It is very difficult to study in the championship of Ukraine, but at this level, when you hit the balls, you are wrong, it works. Yes, we have suffered image damage, because 7: 1 is a lot.
– Shovkovsky was in the app, had you thought about releasing it?
– It would be disrespectful to Alexander, to his career, to the entire football world. Bringing it to the app was the last word. I understood that if something happened to the goalkeeper, then it was impossible to put a field player. If something happened, then Sasha would come out and play, of course.
– Will only those who have remained in the national team play in the match with Spain, despite the defeat due to the disqualification of Malinovsky?
– Yes, in fact, the situation does not allow us to call the players. More precisely, the situation allows it, but I don’t see people who are now ready to compete with the current squad. Those young footballers who will be able to compete for a position in the national team in the future have already been called up. Of course, the loss of a player like Malinovsky, especially in the current situation, is very painful. But there is a situation and I will prepare a team with the players that I have.
Good reaction of the team against Germany. The boys came out in a completely different frame of mind. Rivals like Germany have a great personal advantage. We can only compete with them with 100 percent effort. We change the structure, we change the strategy of the game. I think the guys have fulfilled the game plan almost perfectly. The first half was very difficult for us, the Germans played well, we had to defend and move a lot. Despite the goal conceded, it was important to stay in the game. The guys did it, in the second half they didn’t give up, they didn’t stop, they continued to install. I think we scored well in the last 15 minutes and with a bit of luck we could have saved the game. We were unlucky with the second ball.
– Could you play for Germany differently in the optimal lineup?
– I think we can compete with those rivals with the main players. I was happy to see the fans at the stadium yesterday. They are with the team through thick and thin. It is good that everyone understands the situation. We are a family. If we keep working together, we will have a good time.
