The head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, Andriy Yermak, believes that Acting Minister of Energy Yuriy Vitrenko is the best candidate for the post of First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy.
The candidacy of the acting Minister of Energy of Ukraine, Yuriy Vitrenko, can be put to the vote for the third time in the Verkhovna Rada for his appointment as First Deputy Prime Minister – Minister of Energy.
The head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, Andriy Yermak, declared this on February 13 on the air of the television channel Ukraine 24.
“I do not exclude that there will be a third attempt. I hope, I can say with a high degree of probability that the third attempt to vote in the Verkhovna Rada will be successful,” he said.
According to Yermak, Vitrenko is the best candidate for this post, so consultations with MPs on his appointment are underway.
There are many problems in Ukraine’s energy sector, which is why it needs a “strong minister with his own position, not dependent on any financial group,” said the head of the President’s Office.
Vitrenko in 2018–2020 was executive director of Naftogaz. It participated in the Stockholm Arbitration, which satisfied Ukraine’s claims in disputes with Gazprom over the purchase and transit of Russian gas. He work completed in the company in July 2020.
On December 15, Vitrenko was interviewed by President Volodymyr Zelensky and deputies from Servant of the People. On December 17, the Committee on Energy and Public Services of the Verkhovna Rada did not support his appointment to the post of First Deputy Prime Minister – Minister of Energy of Ukraine. On the same day, the Rada refused to support Vitrenko’s candidacy. 186 popular deputies voted for the required minimum of 226.
On December 21, the Cabinet of Ministers appointed him acting Minister of Energy.
On January 25, 2021, Vitrenko again had an interview with the Servant of the People faction. The president asked for support for his candidacy. On January 28, Prime Minister Denis Shmygal again ran for Vitrenko. During a break in the work of the Verkhovna Rada, the profile committee considered and supported the presentation. However, MPs did not approve Vitrenko’s candidacy a second time: they voted for 204 MPs.
