Russian actor Mikhail Efremov, who was sentenced on September 8 to eight years in a general regime colony, said he did not agree with the court’s verdict and wanted to review it.

According to the investigation, Efremov caused an accident in central Moscow on the night of June 8. In Smolenskaya Square, his Jeep Grand Cherokee entered the opposite lane and collided with a Lada pickup. The driver of the van Sergey Zakharov later died in hospital from his injuries.
Immediately after the accident, the Russian police said that, according to the examination, Efremov got behind the wheel in a state of alcohol intoxication. On June 9, Russian media reported that traces of cocaine and cannabinoids were found in the actor’s analyzes. On June 10, the Moscow prosecutor’s office confirmed that at the time of the accident, Efremov was in a state of not only alcohol, but also drug intoxication. Since June 9, he has been under house arrest.
On June 12, Efremov recorded a video message apologizing for the accident. He, in particular, said he was not going to “evade” responsibility with the help of friends.
On July 21, the Moscow prosecutor’s office confirmed the indictment in this case. The plaintiff is charged with a crime under paragraph “a” of Part 4 of art. 264 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (violation of the rules of the road by a person driving a car, committed while intoxicated, resulting in the death of a person through negligence). The case was transferred to the Presnensky District Court in Moscow. The actor faces a prison term of five to 12 years.
On August 5, the Presnensky Court in Moscow began to consider the case on the merits.
Efremov changed his testimony about his guilt in the accident several times. On June 9, when asked by reporters if he pleaded guilty to the accident, the actor nodded in the affirmative. At a meeting on August 5, Efremov refused to admit his guilt. “How can I admit my guilt when I don’t remember anything,” he said. Prosecutor Diana Galiullina found Efremov’s guilt fully proven and asked the court to sentence the actor to 11 years in prison in a general regime colony and deprive him of his driver’s license for three years. According to the prosecution, Efremov had no regrets and did not plead guilty to the accident, so there are no extenuating circumstances.
On September 8, the Presnensky Court in Moscow found Efremov guilty of an accident that resulted in the death of one person.
Efremov’s lawyer during the trial was Elman Pashayev. On August 21, in a court hearing, Efremov announced that he was refusing to receive the services of Pashayev, who would remain on his team as a consultant. On August 25, it became known that the actor had signed a new agreement with Pashayev.
On September 9, Efremov’s lawyers appealed against the verdict.
