Huawei will launch a PC with its own HarmonyOS 2.0 CPU and Kunpeng

HarmonyOS is Huawei’s own operating system, unveiled at the HDC 2019 developer conference. And it looks like the tech giant will soon launch HarmonyOS in the Chinese market as a platform for its own desktop PCs.

According to a well-known informant from the Weibo social network, Huawei is preparing for the Chinese market home PCs based on HarmonyOS 2.0 and its own Kunpeng processors with ARM architecture. The informant mentioned that various provinces, cities and regions are working with Huawei to create a supply chain in the computer industry. This should help the company establish itself in the PC market, initially in China.

At HDC 2019, Huawei shared its plans to update HarmonyOS. In 2020, the company actually planned to launch HarmonyOS 2.0 for PC on the Chinese market, as well as for smart watches, wristbands, automotive electronics. Until 2022, HarmonyOS will launch on more platforms.

Huawei is already selling its computing solutions for corporate customers based on the Kunpeng single-chip system and its own motherboard.

In 2019, Huawei introduced its first D920S10 workstation motherboard, developed on the basis of the Kunpeng 920 processor. Key technical characteristics of this motherboard:

  • Kunpeng 920 processor with 4/8 cores and a frequency of 2.6 GHz;
  • 6 SATA 3.0 interfaces and 2 M.2 SSD slots;
  • 4 DDR4-2400 UDIMM slots, maximum capacity – 64 GB;
  • slots 1 PCIe 3.0 x16, 1 PCIe 3.0 x4, and 1 PCIe 3.0 x1;
  • Gigabit Ethernet port and optical network port;
  • 4 USB 3.0 and 4 USB 2.0;

The Kungpeng processor and motherboard are not currently intended for consumer use, and you will have to wait until the Huawei 2020 Developer Conference to learn more about the company’s plans for the consumer market. Currently, Huawei has not yet announced the date for the HDC20, but it can be assumed that it will take place in August.
