More than a thousand Hasidim are on the border with Belarus

Today, the Interior Ministry gave a final answer: the border for Hasidic pilgrims will not be opened, so Israel asks them to give up their attempts to reach Ukraine.

The Israeli government calls on Hasidic pilgrims who are trapped on Ukraine’s border with Belarus to return home. This statement was made on Thursday 17 September by Israel’s Minister of Higher Education and Water Resources Zeev Elkin in Twitter.

“Despite numerous attempts to help Israelis trying to enter Ukraine through Belarus or Moldova, this morning the Ukrainian authorities gave a final negative answer. The Ukrainians said they would not allow entry through the border crossings.” Elkin wrote.

“I urge our citizens to return to Israel and comply with self-isolation instructions upon return,” he added.

We recall that the Cabinet of Ministers closed the Novye Yarilovichi checkpoint in the Chernihiv region on the border with Belarus, through which the Hasidim are trying to reach Ukraine despite the quarantine ban. There are more than a thousand Hasidim there.

The Interior Ministry said today that they would not open the border for Hasidim, as the entry ban for foreigners is in effect until the end of September.
