Criminals attack the card accounts of clients of FUIB and other Ukrainian banks: money disappears from people’s accounts.
This became known after numerous complaints from cardholders on specialized forums, and this information was confirmed to the “Strana” in the first international bank of Ukraine.
The first individual messages about hacking of individual accounts by hackers and card theft at FUIB began to appear in late February. And in early March, their number increased significantly.
“04.03, trying to withdraw money, it turned out that I did not have it, they withdrew it at 7.07 in the morning without any of my actions, confirmation passwords, etc. I wrote a statement at the bank branch, I waited a week, I started to write to all possible email addresses of the bank, they called again, they said that first I had to write a statement to the police, only then would they start an investigation! The money left my salary card, “wrote Tatiana , who is treated in the apartment in Sumy.
Other people also reported the embezzlement that took a while to come to light.
“On February 23, when I was paying with my FUIB card for merchandise in the store through the terminal, I received an SMS notification about the withdrawal of funds and the account balance is written there, I found that I did not have enough in my counts about 8 thousand UAH. I immediately went to FUIB- online and discovered that on February 22 at 7:09 am, 3 payments were made in the amount of UAH 2700 each + 13.5 commission for each payment marked as MonoDirect kiev ua “, – said a customer from the Dnipropetrovsk region (branch in Ternovka).
The stories were reviewed by specialized website and banking services. They came from different settlements: Kiev, Zaporozhye, Kharkov, Berdyansk, Kramatorsk, Mariupol, etc.
Most victims claim two characteristics of the new card theft:
- Most of the time, theft happens at night, when everyone is asleep and unable to lock the account, which stops criminals.
- People do not receive messages from FUIB about account cancellations. As you know, this is a mandatory requirement of current legislation: all cards must be connected to SMS informing. When a person performs an operation, the corresponding information must be sent to their phone. Either by SMS from the mobile application, through Viber, or through the bank’s mobile application. But with the attacks on the checking account, no information comes in. That is, a person does not even know that their card account is being stolen and therefore does not block their card.
The only possibility to detect the theft of money from the account and stop it by blocking it is to constantly check the balance of funds in the mobile application.
Additionally, many victims reported that during the robbery they were informed that funds were stolen using the MonoDirect service. Therefore, they began to associate with “Monobank”.
“I’ll explain right away: this doesn’t mean that Monobank steals money from FUIB clients. No. It’s just that the criminals who hack into FUIB accounts are Monobank users and appear to be their clients. Monobank has a service that allows linking to The “Mono” card with card accounts at other banks so that customers can get money from anywhere faster. Criminals somehow managed to break this service and reach other cardholders. This is a complex program, specialists in IT and the FUIB security service so far did not recognize it and did not understand how piracy and data theft occurs, “a security specialist commented on the situation to” Strana “on the basis of anonymity.
The FUIB itself also confirmed that they are now cooperating with Monobank specialists to solve the problem. It was also clear that criminals gained access to secret cardholder data. They know all your passwords and codes and steal money on behalf of the account holders.
“The bank is conducting a detailed investigation of customer requests for unauthorized transactions. It has been established that the access to Internet banking was made with the introduction of the correct username and password, payment card transactions are made with the correct entry, which indicates that the access to Internet banking or the operation was carried out by the client personally, or that the password or the payment card details were compromised ”, the press service told Strana by FUIB.
The investigation is still ongoing and not all “i’s” have been marked. The bankers promise that each case (account hacking) will be considered individually.
“The bank is continuing its internal investigation of the situation that has arisen, including cooperating with colleagues at Monobank in relation to the identification of additional facts. We will definitely inform you of the results of the investigation. We advise all clients in the event of detection of Unauthorized Transactions to timely block cards and accounts, inform the bank and law enforcement agencies ”, – said the press service of FUIB.
At the same time, Strana sources reported that the card hacking epidemic is spreading not just to FUIB accounts and their customers. It is said that it has also hooked other banks.
“Not only do they break FUIB accounts, there are similar stories about other banks. It’s just that FUIB has the majority, because here the highest resonance. But the customers of at least five other banks have suffered. Most of the time through cards linked to Monobank, but it also happens The theft began to occur more frequently in late February, but the peak fell in transactions after March 8, when the new virus was spreading widely. more active.Experts have not yet discovered the scheme and all the technical nuances, are attracting law enforcement officers. But the accounts continue to be opened, “the source told” Country. “
“Strana” sent inquiries to the Cyberpolice and the National Bank to find out the magnitude of the new attack on the card accounts of Ukrainians, and will continue to cover this issue.
We will remember, “Strana” wrote earlier about how counterfeit money is distributed in Ukraine.
We also report that in Kiev, scammers attracted money to engage in trade under the guise of investments.
