Gods of war, European champion, former Dynamo and Bruno Gama

Our “black-white” will play against the Greek “yellow-black”. It cannot be said that Kolos had an insurmountable opponent, but of those who were able to hit (Bulgarian Lokomotiv and Albanian Latchi), Aris is probably the most difficult and famous club. In addition, in the second qualifying round of the Europa League, the Ukrainians have to play against Aris at home: this is the result of the draw. So on September 17, in Thessaloniki, we will find out if Kostyshin’s team will be able to enter the third qualifying round. One of the advantages of this situation is the absence of spectators. The uproar from Greek football fans is well known, especially at home, but by UEFA decision, the playoffs for the LE groups and the Champions League will be played without spectators. In a sense, this fact negates the advantage of playing at home for the “home” team.

History

Despite the fact that now “Aris” does not pull stars from the sky, this club in Greece is very popular. It earned its “name” back in the thirties of the last century. In 1928 and 1932, the “gods of war” (this is the nickname of the Thessaloniki team) became champions of Greece. The next title had to wait 14 years. It also turned out to be the last: after the triumph in 1946, “Aris” no longer won the champion’s crown. The last high-profile title of the “yellow-blacks” was won long ago, in 1970, when the team won the Greek Cup. Since then, Aris has not been among the giants of Greek football. His maximum is the finalist of the Greek Cup (last time in 2010). However, the team regularly participates in European competitions. It is true that, as a rule, it takes off in the first qualifying rounds of the Europa League.

The present

Last season, Aris performed quite successfully – the team finished fifth. In addition, the “gods of war” reached the semifinals of the National Cup, where on aggregate they lost to AEK – 3: 4. However, it should be noted that the fifth line of the Thessaloniki team is at the height of the claims. By the way, Aris is 16 points behind Panathinaikos, who finished in fourth place, and the gap in the table seems to be a gulf relative to champion Olympiacos: 49 points. However, fifth place allowed Aris to try his luck again in the Europa League.

I send

For the second year in a row, in the summer off-season, Aris has been buying the newcomers in batches. For example, last year, on the eve of the start of the Europa League qualification, Aris added eleven (!) New players at once. But this did not help the Thessaloniki team to qualify for the LE Danish Molde qualifier. The team also started unsuccessfully in the Greek championship. As a result, the then Pantelidis team coach was shown the door. The club’s management wanted to see the legendary former Spanish footballer Guti as Aris’s new coach. The sports director of the “yellow-blacks” Angelos Charisteas (the one who scored the goal of the victory for Greece against the Portuguese in the final of Euro 2004; by the way, he was a graduate of “Aris”) flew to negotiate with Guti, but “high contracting parties” for no consensus reached. As a result, Aris was led by German mentor Michael Anning, under whose leadership the team finished fifth.

New season

In the new season, “Aris” re-enters with a whole host of recruits. The club recently signed 31-year-old Spanish striker Christian López, whose last club was Las Palmas. Another acquisition of the “yellow-blacks” is the 20-year-old midfielder from “Vardar” Ali Adem. In addition, the Thessaloniki team was bolstered by Croatian defender Tony Datkovic. The 26-year-old footballer spent the last season at Spanish Huesca. Another rookie is Jace Jaggo, 28, who defended the colors of Austria last season. The notorious Cristian Ganea, a left-back for the Romanian national team, also became a player for the Thessaloniki national team, having signed a two-year contract with Aris. His latest team is Vitorul.

Greek national team forward Dimitris Manos, who previously played for OFI, joined the team’s ranks. It is also signed for two years. Another rookie is Austrian defender Emanuel Sakic, who previously played for Sturm. And now the drum roll: Facundo Bertoglio, a 30-year-old Argentine midfielder, has signed a two-year contract with Aris. Do you remember this young talent, who in 2010 signed for Dynamo Kiev for five years? Unfortunately, the Argentine played only four games for the Kiev team. Then they went around the world: Brazil, France, Cyprus, Kazakhstan. Now here is “Aris”.

Ukrainian trace

Interestingly, until recently, another former Dynamo player, forward Brown Ideye, played for Aris. He played pretty well – he had 10 goals in his asset last season. The Yellow-Blacks wanted to stay with the Nigerian, but he moved to the Turkish Geztepe, signing a two-year contract.

But these are not all of Aris’s connections to Ukrainian soccer. The Thessaloniki team colors are protected by Bruna Gama, who played in our Dnipro in 2013-2016. By the way, the Portuguese recently extended his employment contract with Aris for another two years.
