Germany has not allocated a euro for the construction of Nord Stream 2, while large German companies are participating in the project. If the pipeline is closed, it will be difficult for authorities to compensate them for the costs.
In addition, if Nord Stream 2 is not completed, the investments made for the implementation of the Eugal gas pipeline will be amortized, since this pipeline has already been built entirely by German companies. Because of this, Germany cannot allow the project to stop, energy expert Boris Martsinkevich told baltnews.
“The consent of the German government to the fact that the United States will control its gas projects will lead to quite a large number of lawsuits,” Martsinkevich said. He recalled that Nord Stream-2 is financed mainly by private companies, among which part of the investments belong to German companies.
“The state of Germany and the government of the Federal Republic of Germany are not involved in the Nord Stream 2 project. Not a single euro cent of the state budget has been used to finance it. The financing is carried out by private energy companies, so it is very difficult to understand how the German government will build with its relationship in case the project is not carried out ”, explained the expert.
Nord Stream 2 will avoid transit states (Ukraine, Belarus, Poland, and other Eastern European countries) through the exclusive economic zones and territorial waters of Russia, Finland, Sweden, Denmark, and Germany.
The project is estimated at 9.5 billion euros. It is being implemented by Gazprom in partnership with the European companies Engie, Uniper, OMV, Shell, Wintershall. They pledged to finance Nord Stream 2 in total by 50%, i.e. for 950 million euros each. Gazprom will provide the second half of the funds: 4,750 million euros.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said the pipeline should be put into operation in early 2021. Thus, Gazprom has just over four months left to complete the ambitious project.
